    Description: Summer concert
One of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works, Scheherazade is a symphonic suite based on One Thousand and One Nights. It combines two features typical of Rimsky-Korsakov: dazzling, colourful orchestration and a fascination with the East which runs through much Russian music of the period.

Often called the "Female Beethoven," Mayer was one of the most prolific female composers of the 19th century. She composed eight symphonies and numerous orchestral overtures and other works. In the 21st century, her work has been rediscovered and celebrated for its craftsmanship, originality, and contribution to the Romantic repertoire.

Fredrik Holm has been based in England since 2005, where he has become a multifaceted creative force.  His bassoon concerto "Footpaths" was written in 2013; its seven short movements follow the bassoon from darkness to light.

Audiences at our recent concerts have much enjoyed the detailed, witty and insightful programme notes created by Jo Gascoigne.  If you want Jo's take on these three works, you will need to attend the concert and read the programme (no sneak preview - Jo had no hand in this article.)
